NordVPN Study Shows Alarming Free VPN Trend

NordVPN Study Shows Alarming Free VPN Trend
Keira Waddell Published on 4th July 2023 Senior Writer

A recent analysis by NordVPN has revealed a worrying VPN trend. The study found that around half of VPN users in most countries choose free VPN services, potentially exposing themselves to privacy and security risks. Gen Z is particularly high-risk, with most users of this generation choosing free VPNs.

NordVPN's comprehensive survey aims to understand and uncover international VPN usage habits. Spread over 150,000 respondents across 18 countries between 2020 and 2023, the research ensured a representative sample by considering age, gender, and place of residence.

The study unveiled that 44.2% of US VPN users rely on free services. 40% of Brits also opt for free services while free VPN usage was similarly high in Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Brazil.

This reliance on free VPNs raises concerns, as these services can be operated by or vulnerable to hackers — putting sensitive data in danger. Adrianus Warmenhoven, a cybersecurity advisor at NordVPN, expressed his worry over the particular disregard for online privacy displayed by Gen Z users. He stressed the importance of selecting reliable paid VPN services to ensure that users do not unwittingly pay with their data instead of their money. Warmenhoven also highlighted the numerous advantages of VPNs, including private browsing and secure usage of public WiFi.

Alongside VPN use, Warmenhoven recommends implementing strong and unique passwords encrypted by a password manager. Additionally, he advises using malware removal software and exercising caution when sharing personal information on social media platforms.

In an era where online privacy is of paramount importance, it is essential to be aware of free VPN revenue streams. They often resort to tracking and selling user data to third parties. This usage pattern leaves young individuals and other free VPN users vulnerable to identity theft and fraud.

VPN users should assess their VPN choices and prioritize their online security. Users can ensure a safer and more private online experience by opting for reputable paid VPN services, effectively safeguarding personal information from potential threats.
