Avast VPN Not Working With Netflix? Here's What To Do

Kristina Perunicic Updated on 14th July 2023 Managing Editor

I recently decided to try Avast’s SecureLine VPN with streaming platforms such as Netflix. I had tried it before but while it had good security and privacy tools, it didn’t work too well for streaming - it used to give the frustrating message:

"Whoops, something went wrong... Streaming Error. You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again. For more help, visit netflix.com/proxy. For additional assistance in resolving this issue, please visit our Help Center. Error Code: M7111-5059"

Netflix error message
Unfortunately, it still doesn’t work. SecureLine VPN neither has the necessary unblocking features to reliably access any of Netflix’s libraries nor does it keep its servers safe from the platform’s blacklisting tools. Add the uncompetitively small server network of just 700 servers worldwide and this VPN just isn’t a good choice for streaming.

So, if you’re looking to enjoy Netflix’s geo-blocked content, a much better option is to try a different VPN instead. My recommendation is ExpressVPN - it has a huge and very reliable server base spread across 94 countries, and it's excellent at unblocking Netflix’s geo-restrictions.

What’s more, ExpressVPN also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, making it a risk-free VPN to try.

  2. Download the app, install it on your device, and connect to a server in your prefered country.
  3. Go to Netflix and start watching.

Why Can’t the Avast SecureLine VPN Unblock Netflix?

SecureLine is good at many things but it’s just not good enough at the three things a VPN needs to deal with Netflix’s firewalls and restrictions:

  • Great unblocking capabilities to unlock all or most of the platform’s libraries.
  • Good defensive tools to keep the VPN’s servers and IPs safe from Netflix’s blocks.
  • A vast enough server network so that the user can always have more servers to fall back on even if one or two get blocked.

Avast’s SecureLine simply doesn’t provide any of these features. Netflix is the harshest streaming platform when it comes to blocking VPNs and there are very few providers that work reliably with it.

Most others don’t even try too hard to make servers work well with Netflix because it knows it’d be too much of an investment. Avast’s SecureLine seems to fall in this category. It’s good for privacy and security when traveling but not for Netflix.

ExpressVPN is my current recommendation for Netflix as it satisfies all three of the conditions above. It’s also a great provider for watching streaming platforms in general and I’ll detail its benefits in that regard below. If you’re hesitant on trying a new service right now, ExpressVPN has a 30-day money-back guarantee too and all its desktop or mobile apps are very easy to install.

How does ExpressVPN Unblock Netflix?

There are several key factors that make ExpressVPN much better than Avast’s SecureLine at unblocking Netflix. The first is ExpressVPN has a much bigger network of 3,000 servers in 94 countries. This means it has a greater chance of successfully bypassing Netflix’s many geo-blocks. ExpressVPN’s network is also growing rapidly every year which further serves to circumvent Netflix’s server blacklisting.

ExpressVPN is also one of the best VPNs at breaking through the geo-restrictions of many streaming platforms, not just Netflix. Additionally, its IP addresses are frequently updated which makes it even easier to fool Netlfix’s geo-blocks.

ExpressVPN’s Other Benefits

One of the main reasons why ExpressVPN is so good for streaming is its lightning-fast server speeds. These are crucial for streaming as the VPN’s speeds dictate how fast your internet is going to be and how good of a video resolution you’re going to enjoy. Something else I really like is the MediaStreamer feature. This neat tool allows the user to watch Netflix even on devices that don’t typically support VPNs such as Apple TV or LG TV.

The 30-day money-back guarantee, 24/7 customer support, and the great privacy and security features of ExpressVPN just make it an even better choice.

FAQs on Watching Netflix With ExpressVPN

What’s the best VPN for Netflix?

There are a couple of VPNs that tend to switch places at the top when it comes to Netflix but my current preferred choice is ExpressVPN. Right now, this VPN simply offers everything I’m looking for when it comes to streaming. It has both great server speeds for a crystal-clear video quality and a large, stable, and reliable server network for uninterrupted bingeing. There’s also the MediaStreamer feature which allows me to enjoy Netflix on my AppleTV and some very good unblocking and IP-shifting tools to stay clear of Netflix’s firewalls, and lots of additional perks and features.

Can I use a free VPN to watch Netflix?

There are some free VPNs you can try with Netflix but I can’t think of any I’d honestly recommend. Free VPNs may work with some streaming platforms but Netflix is much too tough on VPNs for them. Free VPNs just don’t have the server networks, unblocking tools, or data leak protection to give a reliable, stable, and smooth Netflix experience. Add the slow server speeds and the best you can hope for is temporary access to a patchy 240p video.

The much better option is to subscribe to a premium provider such as ExpressVPN and to use its 30-day money-back guarantee period as a “free VPN” of sorts. This way you can binge a couple of Netflix shows and then decide whether you want to continue with one of ExpressVPN’s well-priced plans or get a refund.

How can I get an IP address in a particular country?

To access all of Netflix's content, you need to have access to different IP addresses in various countries, which means accessing its international content libraries. Although it may sound complex, it becomes remarkably straightforward when using the appropriate VPN.

All you need to do to get a US IP address, for example, is log in your VPN’s app, go to the list of countries the VPN works in, pick any server in the US, and that’s all - you should now be connected with an IP address in the country. To switch to a different server or country, just repeat the process with your preferred country.

ExpressVPN has always been a great VPN choice but the recent addition of the Lightway protocol may have propelled this provider to the top when it comes to Netflix and other streaming platforms. The lightning-fast server speeds enabled by Lightway, plus the convenience of the MediaStreamer feature, put ExpressVPN head and shoulders above the rest.

Add the large and secure server network, the stability of the IP-shifting tools, and the reliable access to Netflix thanks to ExpressVPN’s unblocking features, and there’s just no drawback to watching Netflix through this VPN.
